Stephen Burpee, M.D., is a board-certified, fellowship-trained minimally invasive general and bariatric surgeon. After spending five years as a family physician in Ontario, Canada, he embarked on a surgical career. His experience as a family physician has helped him manage the complex medical issues surrounding bariatric surgical patients.
Dr. Burpee completed his general surgery residency at Lenox Hospital in New York City, New York. During this time, he also spent six months at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan learning laparoscopic bariatric surgery under the guidance of some of the pioneers in this field. Following residency, Dr. Burpee returned to Toronto, Canada, for a two-year fellowship in minimally invasive general surgery. He also spent two months at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, refining his laparoscopic bariatric surgical skills. Dr. Burpee has a special interest in diseases of the upper gastrointestinal tract and surgical management of morbid obesity. He has significant experience in the laparoscopic management of hernia, gallbladder and colorectal disease. Dr. Burpee is also trained in robotic bariatric surgery. As a surgeon, he finds it rewarding to address multiple medical concerns, including diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure and more, with bariatric surgery. In most cases, the results of bariatric surgery give his patients a new lease on life.

He provides surgical treatment of diseases of the foregut (esophagus and stomach) in the Tucson community. His bariatric surgery practice includes primary (sleeve gastrectomy, gastric bypass, duodenal switch and the intra-gastric balloon) and revision weight loss surgery procedures. His foregut surgical practice addresses laryngopharyngeal reflux (LPR), gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), hiatal hernia, achalasia, gastroparesis and benign and malignant conditions of the esophagus and stomach.
Dr. Chiasson was an early adopter of both new techniques and technology in the surgical treatment of these diseases. He is a member of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, the American Foregut Society and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons. He has numerous publications to his credit that address such issues as minimally invasive surgical techniques and outcomes, health policy, medical ethics and health law.
